Connecticut State Parks

Connecticut has a lot of interesting and fun state parks. Here are a few of the best.

Dinosaur State Park (Westchesterfield) - When an excavation for a building project uncovered over 2,000 dinosaur prints, the building project was extinguished and the 65 acre area became a state park. When you visit, you will see the zigzagging tracks, can check out the dinosaur skeleton cast and see life-size models of other prehistoric animals.

Putnam Memorial State Park (Redding) - This is where over 3,000 members of the continental army camped during the winter of 1778-1779. When you visit, you can see a reconstructed blockhouse and tour the museum’s exhibits. In addition, on site are fishing, interpretive trails, sports fields, and ice skating.

Hammonsset Beach State Park (Madison) - A 900 acre park with a 2 mile area on the Long Island Sound, this is a great place to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. You can go hiking, biking, boating, scuba diving, fishing, and cross country skiing.

Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park (Groton) - Learn a bit of history as you see the 135 ft. monument to the 88 Revolutionary soldiers slain here. Additional activities include cross country skiing, mountain biking, and hiking.

Sherwood Island State Park (Westport)- A beautiful park where you can enjoy scenic drives, hiking, swimming, fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling along with kite flying, volleyball, badminton, bocce, horseshoes, and softball. Also at the park is a nature center with a touch tank, live animal exhibits of area reptiles and amphibians, and shore bird species.
